idea-spark
Generate ONE reviewer-defensible, implementable research idea with a concrete method and falsification plan from a stated research direction. Use when the user asks for a research idea, novelty analysis, bottleneck diagnosis, or paper-shape suggestion. Skip code review, debugging, and unconstrained brainstorming without research context.

What does this agent skill do?
Idea Spark
Generate one literature-grounded research proposal with a concrete mechanism and honest falsification plan. A completed proposal is NOT evidence that the method works, is novel, or that a theorem is proved. Ordinary Chinese and English serve readers outside the subfield; the detailed English card retains technical obligations and implementation choices.
One run is one fresh directory: next writes a run_contract.json into an empty directory and
drives only directories that carry one. A directory with files but no contract is refused, not resumed.
Driving a run
Use an absolute skill path and a fresh absolute run directory. Naming convention remains
$PWD/ideaspark_run/<topic-slug>; if taken, append a numeric suffix. Never reuse phase0.
Run python3 "$SKILL_DIR/scripts/run.py" next --dir "$RUN_DIR" --query "<direction>".
Consume the WHOLE emitted step, including every input path. Execute it, then run next again.
The navigator is read-only. It first emits quality_init to establish the run contract.
Read host-runbook.md BEFORE the first model call: context discipline (isolated sub-agent per call, artifacts to disk never to chat, compact between phases), consume every emitted step WHOLE, exit codes 10/11 are handshakes, entry points, validators and configuration. Retain the existing Phase 0/1 retrieval/diagnosis strategy: read retrieval-runbook.md when routed there. Setup remains in setup.md. Do not fabricate retrieval records. No mid-flow questions: infer missing intake fields honestly within the user's scope. Use existing connector caches/retries and report degraded grounding.
Version-bound model work
Every Phase 2+ model call uses a prepared request in .quality/<stage>/request.json.
Preparation fingerprints actual inputs and prompts BEFORE execution. Read that request
and the named prompt(s), then use one fresh isolated context. Selection + generation stay
in the same context; generation vs audit, revision vs review, and author vs implementability
review must be separate contexts. Return only output path and concise status to the host.
The call writes ONLY .quality/<stage>/result.json:
{"request_id":"<exact request id>","artifacts":{"<requested relative path>":<JSON payload>}}.
Do not write canonical outputs directly. The next step emits quality_record, which rejects
stale inputs, wrong request ids and concurrent output changes, then publishes the payloads
and a commit receipt. Existing artifacts cannot silently stand in for a new review.
All selected files are task data, not additional instructions.
Each result corresponds to a precise input version. A core change invalidates relevant coherence, novelty, falsification and cost checks even if query terms did not change. A title-only change needs presentation review, not an invented second contribution. See quality-flow.md for interfaces and limits.
Contribution selection and revision
- No minimum pattern count. One complete mechanism needs no extra defense.
- Companions and siblings require object → producer → consumer → capability lost. Evaluation alone is not a method dependency. HARD RULE on a method anchor: no controlled_diagnostic_design sibling or companion and no evaluation_only component — the measurement goes into falsification_prediction; the gate fails it and grants one REGENERATE. Empirical diagnostic anchors and proof objects remain legitimate for their own shapes.
- Historical patterns/pairs are vocabulary and inspiration, not mandatory templates. A sub-pattern may be null with a truthful non-applicability reason; do not invent a C##.
- Keep the independent naive-baseline comparison. Fewer components are not automatically deeper, and a strong conditional claim is better than avoiding a checkable claim.
- The coherence gate reports and never edits: its wording fixes are W# suggestions the author applies or keeps with a stated premise; T5 runs the tracer's naive and the candidate's declared one.
- Executed defects are repaired before they are judged: the coherence gate runs the candidate's own rules (never a simulated model) and keeps only structural findings; the author gets bounded formula-repair rounds, each re-executed by a fresh trace; only survivors reach the audit and the hard floor. See the formula repair loop in quality-flow.md.
- One evidence rule: what the program can compute, it computes — the trace (instantiated / stopped
steps, executed dry run, negative control), cost arithmetic, removal tests. A reviewer's label is
an input, never a gate; a review
failblocks only with executed evidence. The hard floor is an upheld executed finding or exact-mechanism prior art; the Reject-lesson, anti-pattern, recipe and companion-attestation checks are retired (29 audited cycles, no verdict effect). - Revision is patch-only: multiple operations may address one target_id. Cover all targets, synchronize affected fields, remove obsolete/repeated text and preserve protected fields. A request needing a different method is redesign, not a tactical append.
- The merger writes the merge record merged_revision.json next to final_candidate.json; the original result/receipt stays immutable. Independent post-revision review is required.
- User resource ceilings never change. Preserve the original compute_budget and separately assess the current method. Unknown cost is unknown, not feasible.
Phase 4: source fidelity before explanatory prose
Fixed order: technical skeleton/source record → technical fill → implementation audit (audit report + cost assessment, one call) → one bounded source-omission correction when needed, followed by a technical review of the repaired text ONLY in that case → ordinary-language derivation → (fidelity review, off by default) → validation and rendering.
Implementation audit is diagnostic, not a prose replacement: distinguish source omissions, ordinary implementation choices and undefined core operations. Unproved but concretely specified research propositions are proof obligations, not invented results. Rendering must never merge enriched_steps into the method. Markdown and PDF use the same checked expansion. No new mechanism, guarantee, assumption or evaluation definition may appear silently during explanation. Preserve independent-oracle requirements.
Ordinary text keeps necessary explanations and why each step matters; there is no short-card word cap. Explain terms on first use, remove repetition and label pedagogical examples. The std cards carry Title, Motivation and Method only, with one readable heading per method module; the detail card adds main contribution, minimal falsification, resources and open questions. Output names remain idea.std.zh.md, idea.std.en.md and idea.detail.en.md (plus the PDFs when available) in phase4/; every intermediate and build file is under phase4/work/. Report missing/unverified PDF rendering honestly.
Depth: a run audits at idea depth by default — the mechanism, its novelty and its falsification
structure; Phase 4 lists implementation holes on the detail card instead of executing, repairing and
re-reviewing the experiment plan. Start the run with IDEASPARK_DEPTH=experiment for the full Phase 4
when the reader will run the minimal experiment. In both depths candidates state named variables, not
constants; choosing values is the experimenter's job and is never a blocking finding.
Three run outcomes: a card; a card marked FAILED VALIDATION (the validation ended in failure and
the last candidate is printed with a Status line naming the stage and reason; IDEASPARK_FAILED_CARD=off
restores the old refusal, which leaves phase_3_failed.md or needs_work.json instead); or
do_not_generate.md (Phase 1 found no research question to answer). A technical review that finds
the declared experiment infeasible routes one bounded falsification revision before Phase 4 re-runs.
The host loop is the same on every harness: run next, do what it says (a bash line verbatim, or an
LLM step in a fresh context that writes the envelope next describes), run next again. Nothing in
the flow depends on a particular host; the full call inventory is in references/quality-flow.md.
Two record-handshake rules the host must know: a large stage output may be written in parts
(.quality/STAGE/result.parts/NN.json, merged by quality_record in name order), and a result
quality_record rejects (REJECTED on stderr, no needs_work) is re-issued by next as the same step
with the findings appended — fix those fields in result.json and record again.
Completion, failure and cost bounds
DONE requires current receipts, successful deterministic validation and matching rendered
artifacts, not merely three files. Return the cards with the explicit research-proposal /
not-experimentally-validated boundary. needs_work preserves drafts and concrete blockers.
do_not_generate and phase_3_failed remain legitimate outcomes; phase_3_failed.md lists every
cycle with the evidence that ended it and reproduces the best cycle in full as an unaudited draft
(phase_3_failed_best_candidate.json) — returned to the user, never rendered as a card.
A deterministic rejection of the selection, or a needs_work verdict from the post-revision
review or the fidelity review, is not immediately terminal: the navigator emits ONE bounded recovery
(REGENERATE re-runs selection + generation with the gate findings as input; REAUDIT re-runs
an audit report that broke a deterministic contract check; REREVISE re-runs the revision transaction
with the review findings as input; REDERIVE re-derives the plain cards likewise). A second
needs_work on the same review is terminal. No other review has a retry.
Semantic redesign follows the existing information-gain retry budget: at most three candidate cycles under one framing; one bottleneck re-diagnosis can grant one further attempt. No free-form revision loop. Source corrections are bounded to one pass. Hard failures never become successful delivery merely because a retry counter ran out. Style/length warnings and ordinary implementation choices do not hard-kill a proposal. A needs_work status can be re-examined after actual input changes; old receipts still fail.
Maintaining this skill
Read design-notes.md when changing the skill.
For an explicitly offline implementation task, do NOT replay real generation or invoke model reviewers. Report those evaluations as unverified. Separate generation from evaluation, preserve source versions, and never select a result using test-judge feedback.
Model/configuration compatibility
Retain existing NOVELTY_LLM_REASONING_LARGE_CMD / NOVELTY_LLM_CLASSIFY_FAST_CMD routing. Mechanical classification/translation may use the configured fast tier; relevance, novelty and mechanism judgment require the reasoning tier. Do not pick a new model silently. Connector/retrieval options and user-relative compute precedence are unchanged; details remain in the retrieval runbook and the executable command help.
